Health care costs are out-of-control. It is about time we reform the system and ensure access to quality, affordable health care access for all. I support a national health care insurance exchange that would provide access to everyone. This would reform the private insurance market by creating rules and standards for participating insurance plans to ensure fairness and to make individual coverage more affordable and accessible. Insurers would have to issue every applicant a policy that offers fair and stable premiums that will not depend upon health status. The plan must cover all essential medical services, including preventive, maternity and mental health care. While I support a prescription drug benefit for seniors under Medicare , Lamar Alexander and President Bush took the wrong approach. They passed a bill that is corporate welfare for drug companies. The program works great for Big Pharma but not average Americans. I'll work to reform the system, and harness the power of competition: like allowing states and the federal government to negotiate for lower prices from the drug companies and allowing the re-importation of generic drugs from Canada. |
