The biggest economic crisis in America is taking place on the kitchen tables of Tennessee families. Under the misguided policies of the Bush Administration, and with the blind support of Lamar Alexander in the Senate, Tennessee families are being devastated. People are being hit right in the pocketbook with no relief in sight. Gas is almost $4.00 a gallon. Health care and prescription drug costs have spiraled out of control. People are losing their homes. Families aren't able to pay their bills, let alone save for college. We have to jump start our economy. Washington has our economy on the wrong track and is not doing enough to turn it around. In the Senate, I’ll end corporate welfare for big oil and drug companies who are making it harder for the middle class to make ends meet. I'll end the war in Iraq—eliminating a massive strain on our economy—and work tirelessly to create and protect Tennessee jobs. I will vote to repeal parts of the Bush tax cuts that favor wealthy Americans, and sponsor legislation that will give tax relief to middle-class Americans. I will remove existing tax incentives that make it too easy for American businesses to ship American jobs overseas. And I support a moratorium on all new Free Trade agreements until existing agreements are analyzed and the appropriate adjustments are made to protect human rights, labor and environmental protections. Additionally, we need to restore fiscal discipline: every dollar our government spends that it does not have, is a dollar stolen directly from the pockets of our children and grandchildren. I support pay-as-you-go budgeting. Anytime Congress wants to spend more money or pass a new tax cut, it must designate where the money is coming from. |
